General Usage

  • Use only MyLDSMail, the Church's filtered e-mail service, to communicate with family and your mission president.
  • Do not use e-mail to communicate confidential or sensitive information.
  • Do not use or visit any other Internet service or site that has not been authorized by your mission president.
  • Use e-mail only on preparation day.
  • Use computers in public facilities such as libraries or appropriate commercial outlets. Any cost for using e-mail is to be paid by the missionary.
  • While using computers, always stay next to your companion so that you can see each other's monitors. Do not use members' computers.
  • Missionaries can access their MyLDSMail account up to 60-days after their mission release date.

Privacy and Security

  • Be careful about what you put in writing. Once e-mail has been sent, it cannot be recalled. Do not use the system for confidential communication. The e-mail system may record all messages sent and received. Authorized representatives of the Church may monitor and review your messages and e-mail use at any time. Under certain circumstances, including litigation, the Church may be required todisclose users' e-mail messages and other materials created by users.
  • E-mail is increasingly being used as a way to distribute computer viruses and spam messages. It is often difficult to know which messages or attachments may be infected. The Church makes an effort to analyze all messages that enter the e-mail system from the Internet. However, it cannot catch all harmful messages. The ultimate responsibility rests upon you to ensure that proper virus protection policies are followed:
    • Be cautious in opening e-mail attachments. Open them only if you know and trust the sender and you know exactly what the attachment is or does. As a matter of good practice, first save attachments to a local hard drive and scan them for viruses before opening them.
    • Do not send or propagate messages that warn of potential or known virus infections. Many of these messages are hoaxes and may cause undue alarm or concern. If you receive a message that you suspect of being infected by a virus or that warns of a virus, forward it to

Inappropriate E-Mail Use

This section addresses practices that are all too common in the day-to-day use of e-mail. On the individual level, many of these practices may seem harmless. However, when multiplied across the entire e-mail system, they consume valuable network resources. To help us properly manage the tools that are provided, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Do not send or propagate e-mail messages that either contain or refer to material that is sexually oriented, offensive, fraudulent, harassing, intimidating, defamatory, threatening, abusive, or discriminatory. Such material is not only inappropriate but may also be illegal, and sending or propagating such e-mail may result in disciplinary action against the individual(s) involved.
  • Do not use the e-mail system to propagate jokes, screen savers, sound clips, videos, chain letters etc.
  • Do not create chain letters. If you receive one, do not forward it. Messages that encourage you to forward to "all contacts in your address book" or to "all those whom you care about" should not be forwarded.
  • Do not give your missionary e-mail address to any list servers or distribution lists that do not accomplish a specific missionary purpose. The Church reserves the right to block messages to or from any list servers if they are not in compliance with this policy.
  • Avoid broadcasting and spamming. Broadcasting is a form of e-mail spam and is defined as either:
    • Sending large numbers of messages in rapid succession, or
    • Sending one or more messages to large numbers of users.
  • Only those users with a "need to know" should be addressed in a message. It is the sender's responsibility to know who is being addressed.
  • Avoid spoofing, which is the falsification of sender information or the sender pretending to be someone that he or she is not. It is a form of fraud and is never appropriate.
